Me and the HHS Mandate

Posted on August 02, 2012 in Politics

So the HHS mandate took effect today for most businesses, forcing them to offer insurance plans that cover contraceptives and abortifacients. There are court cases firing up to challenge this mandate on the grounds that it infringes upon the freedom of religion. Already one injunction is protecting a family-run business run by Catholics from having to obey this mandate. May there be many more until the mandate is struck down.

What about me? When I started working for myself I was able to convert the plan that my previous employer offered to a self-paid one. I took over paying the premiums for myself and I got to keep the same very good plan. I still have it now. I don't even know whether it covers contraceptives, abortifacient or any other morally repugnant or problematic things. In my case, it doesn't matter. I'm paying for my own plan and only my own plan. I'm not going to use it for those things, so I'm in the clear. Many business owners are not so lucky.

All we can do, at this point, is hope for the HHS mandate to be struck down. And for the entire Obamacare package to be repealed.
