Behead All Those Who...

Posted on September 16, 2012 in Politics

So there's a lot of these "Behead all those who insult the prophet/Islam" signs showing up again. Well, I gotta say that I'm a Catholic Christian. So obviously, I believe that my faith is true... because... why else would I believe it? It follows then that I don't believe Islam is true, because I don't believe in it, right? So to conclude: I'm a Christian not a Muslim. So I don't believe in Islam and...

Me and the HHS Mandate

Posted on August 02, 2012 in Politics

So the HHS mandate took effect today for most businesses, forcing them to offer insurance plans that cover contraceptives and abortifacients. There are court cases firing up to challenge this mandate on the grounds that it infringes upon the freedom of religion. Already one injunction is protecting a family-run business run by Catholics from having to obey this mandate. May there be many more until the mandate is struck down.

What about me? When I started working for myself I was able to convert the plan that my previous employer offered to a self-paid one. I took over paying the premiums for myself and I got to keep the same very good plan. I still have it now. I don't even know whether it covers contraceptives, abortifacient or any other morally repugnant or problematic things. In my case, it doesn't matter. I'm paying for my own plan and only my own plan. I'm not going to use it for those things, so I'm in the clear. Many business owners are not so lucky.

All we can do, at this point, is hope for the HHS mandate to be struck down. And for the entire Obamacare package to be repealed.

The Mandate Kicks In

Posted on August 01, 2012 in Politics

An excellent article on the HHS mandate kicking in today by George Weigel over at the StopHHS.com site. The quote below is particularly spot on. Read the whole thing.

More broadly, an array of commentators have seen in the HHS mandate a quintessential expression of the administration's disdain for the institutions of civil society, which it seems to regard as merely the vehicles for the delivery of "services" the government decides to provide, rather than as associations with their own inherent integrity and their own unique role in democratic public life.

Chick-Fil-A Thoughtcrime

Posted on August 01, 2012 in Politics

[Update: Several folks have corrected me on Dan Cathy being Chick-Fil-A's President and COO, not the CEO as I originally wrote. Thanks to all who pointed this out to me. I have corrected the post.] So today I had lunch with some friends and former co-workers at Chick-Fil-A in Cranberry Township, PA. Today, if you don't know, has been dubbed "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day". Its in response to various politicians such as Boston's and Chicago's Mayors...

Furlongs Per Fortnight

Posted on June 30, 2012 in Religion , Politics

Back a couple of decades ago when I was a control systems engineer... (no, I'm serious, it was a couple of decades ago... and get off my lawn!) I was designing control systems for industrial processes. In the steel industry its common to measure and control the speed of a strip of steel in feet per minute in the US. Elsewhere, where they're all metrical 'n stuff, it was measured in meters per minute. We...
